New Coalition Plans to Reduce Key Short-Lived Emissions
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a new global initiative—The Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants—to reduce methane, black carbon, and hydrofluorocarbon emissions, which together account for about one-third of global warming. The coalition plans to reduce pollutants through regional and international cooperation, raising global awareness, building capacity in developing countries, and driving national action plans, among others. If implemented, the initiative has the potential to reduce warming by as much as 0.5 degrees C by 2050 and prevent millions of premature deaths and millions of tons of crop loss by 2030.
