Mexico Passes Legally Binding Emission Reduction Targets
Nature News reported that Mexico joins the United Kingdom as the only two countries to have passed legally binding carbon emission reduction goals. The new law—passed unanimously by the senate and by 118 out of 128 in the lower house—requires a reduction in carbon emissions of 30 percent below current business-as-usual levels by 2020 and 50 percent below 2000 levels by 2050. The law also mandates that by 2024, 35 percent of Mexico’s electricity must come from renewable sources.
