Southwest Climate Outlook for May 2010
Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS) has published their Southwest Climate Outlook for May 2010. The latest issue features an article covering the work of Dave Bertelsen, a Tucson naturalist who has documented extensive shifts in plant and animal species in the Santa Catalina Mountains over the last three decades. Bertelsen has observed large shifts in the numbers and movements of species in recent years, indicating that this mountainous desert ecosystem is feeling the effects of global climate change. The Climate Outlook also summarizes recent temperature, precipitation, drought, and fire frequency Arizona and New Mexico and presents forecasts covering the next six months. Above average temperatures are forecast for June-November, while there is equal likelihood of below-average, average, or above-average precipitation.
