GreenHouse Holdings, Inc., a company providing sustainable, green products and infrastructure for builders, communities, and industries worldwide, has just launched Greenhouse Soluciones, a Mexican subsidiary that will work with the tequila industry to reduce waste and green the tequila production process. Tequila production can have severe environmental consequences, using large quantities of water and generating tons of waste: the production of one liter of tequila can create up to 5kg of agave pulp waste and ten liters of liquid waste—a sizeable amount, considering the growing popularity of tequila. Currently, agave waste is deposited in landfills, but Greenhouse Soluciones will reduce this waste by creating a composting center near Jalisco, Guadalajara, to process the agave leftovers. The compost produced will be used by local farms.  The facility plans to employ 70 workers and reduce agave waste by 30,000 tons per year. Greehouse Soluciones also plans to explore other ways to sustainably manage tequila production, including creating renewable sources of energy from agave waste and conserving water.
