Ocean conditions in the tropical Pacific indicate the recent El Niño is transitioning into a La Niña, with cooler ocean temperatures and lower sea surface heights in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. La Niña conditions can contribute to more tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, and typically lead to drier winters in the Southwest.
